what IS THE Montgomery G.I. BILL s-r?
The Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR, or chapter 1606 of title 10, US Code) is an educational assistance program to assist eligible persons to continue their education or training after high school. MGIB-SR is the first such program that doesn't require service in the active Armed Forces in order to qualify.
The Army National Guard offers the Montgomery G.I. Bill Selective Reserve (MGIB-SR) to it's traditional drilling soldiers (one weekend per month) to help with the expense of attending college or other training programs. This benefit is used while the soldier is actively drilling NOT after the soldier finishes their service time.
PROGRAMS COVERED
Soldiers may use the MGIB-SR for any degree program (Associate through Doctoral), certificate or correspondence courses, cooperative training, independent study programs, apprenticeship/ on the job training, vocational school, and flight training. View a list of Tennessee Schools approved for the GI Bill. Understand, this a Federal Benefit and not limited to Tennessee.
Montgomery g.i. bill-Sr PAYMENTS
This tax-free benefit is paid directly to the soldier and not the educational
institution. This benefit currently pays a total amount of $10,692 for up to 36 academic
months (approximately, 4 years and 1 semester of college). This benefits last 14
years from the eligibility start date or as long as the soldier remains in an
active drilling status.
View current rates. Soldiers who are mobilized on federal active duty
(Title 10) receive an extension of their period of eligibility for the period of
the mobilization plus 4 months. National Guard soldiers can use
100% Federal Tuition Assistance while receiving
Montgomery GI Bill payments.
Prior service
members may also be entitled to the Selective Reserve Montgomery G.I. Bill.

The Army National Guard G.I. Bill Kicker pays up to $200 a month while attending
college (or other approved technical school). Paid as a stipend, this incentive
pays up to $12,600 over a period of 36 months.
